SEED phrase of a crypto wallet is a list of 12, 18, or 24 random English words used to gain access to a virtual Trust wallet in the event of a lost password or the device in which the wallet is installed. It is usually generated when setting up a crypto wallet.
Once you have access to SEED, take a pen and paper and physically write them down. Memorizing a phrase is not a viable option. Also, never save an initial phrase on platforms that can be easily hacked, such as Evernote or iOS Notes. Your SEED gives anyone access and control over your resources.
Can someone just “guess” your seed phrase?
- Phrase sequence (BIP39) used to generate SEED phrases has 2048 words.
- If the SEED contains only 12 random words, the number of possible combinations is 2048 ^ 12 = 2 ^ 132.
- 2 ^ 132 is a really big number. How big? The universe is 2 ^ 58.6 seconds old. If you tried one combination every second from the Big Bang to the present day, you would have 2 ^ (132-58.6) = 2 ^ 73.4 combinations left.
There are approximately 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe. All of these stars burn before your computer guesses SEED for a particular wallet. In other words, you really can’t guess.
How to keep SEED safe
Although paper is relatively destructible, it is probably one of the best ways to keep your SEED safe. Write it down on a piece of paper and store it in a safe place where no one but you has access. You can laminate the paper to prevent water damage and possible tearing and wear.
Engraving to a metal
For added security, you can engrave a list of your unique words on steel plates or other durable metals that are more durable than paper.
Split it to more parts
You can write the first 4 words on a piece of paper and the next 4 words on another piece of paper and continue until you have completed the whole phrase. Each paper can be stored separately, so access to the entire phrase will be difficult to trace for anyone but you. Be sure to number the pieces of paper so that the order does not change.
Do not store SEED on a computer with Internet access or on any online platform
Everything stored online is easy to access. The online world is not as secure as many people think. Do not photograph, print or store your generated words on any digital platform.
A few words in conclusion
Your SEED plays an important role in the safety of your cryptocurrencies. You must therefore keep it safe and out of the reach of anyone who could abuse it. In case you lose access to your crypto wallet, you can easily regain control of your crypto wallet with SEED.
